Dr. Nwando Olayiwola outlines five keys to integrating health equity into health plans. In a recent Health Affairs Blog editorial, Humana’s newly appointed chief health equity officer, Dr. Nwando Olayiwola outlined a framework for how Humana can integrate health equity measures and goals into Humana’s overall work as a healthcare company. This includes defining enterprise-wide measures and goals, and coordinating efforts to achieve those goals across
all of Humana’s lines of business.
The editorial outlines five major priorities and accompanying sought-after outcomes, including:
- Prioritizing prevention and wellness through benefits and care delivery redesign
- Prioritizing communities across engagements and investments
- Prioritizing innovation, including population and digital health
- Prioritizing education, research, and workforce development with academic-community collaborations
- Prioritizing action and accountability through data-driven improvement
This framework helps position health equity at the core of the business – and leadership mission of health plans – with the ultimate goal of achieving the health equity bullseye of the
“quadruple aim” – including an enhanced patient experience, improved population health, reduced costs, and care team satisfaction.
