Medicare Advantage Star Ratings help you understand which plans shine the brightest

The higher the Star Rating, the more confidence you can have in the plan
By Kathie Mancini, Humana Medicare East Central Region President

Many of us have made a shopping decision based on how many “stars” a product has online. While helpful, you’ve probably wondered about these starred ratings. Who awards the stars? Are the ratings fair and accurate?  Do the reviewers consider the same things that matter to you?

There’s no mystery behind Star Ratings for Medicare Advantage (MA) and Part D prescription drug plans. That’s because they’re issued by the federal Medicare agency, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), every fall, and they really do make a big difference.

Based on just under 40 quality and performance measures from CMS, including the experiences of people like you, Star Ratings can empower you to choose a plan with superior  service and customer satisfaction. They’re also a helpful way to understand overall quality when comparing plans, with 5 stars representing the highest quality rating.

You can find Star Ratings using Medicare’s Plan Finder tool available on Medicare.gov, by calling 1-800-MEDICARE, or by speaking with your local licensed MA sales agent. In Northern Kentucky, Humana is proud that one of our MA plans has a 5-Star Rating in 2022.

Want to understand how a plan addresses health issues important to you? Star Ratings are awarded for specific services and performance areas for both health plans and prescription drug plans. These include how the plan cares for the health of their members, how well the plan helps people manage chronic conditions like diabetes or hypertension, and member experiences with the health or drug plan.

Take Humana’s Kentucky MA HMO plan (H0292) as an example. We focus on getting our members in Northern Kentucky the care they need to live healthier lives. During the COVID-19 pandemic, this meant helping to protect our members by mailing thousands of masks directly to their homes and removing barriers – like lack of transportation – that may have stopped people from getting vaccinated.

While Star Ratings shouldn’t be your only criteria for choosing a plan, they are a useful indicator of a plan’s quality. They can help you narrow down your options (there may be many) and, ultimately, ensure you choose a plan that strives to not only protect your health and wellbeing, but give you peace of mind.

If you’d like to enroll in a 5-star plan like Humana’s MA HMO plan in Northern Kentucky now’s the time to explore your options. From now until Dec. 7, people with Medicare can select their plan options for 2022. And, if you’ve already made your selection for 2022 but think you didn’t select a 5-star plan, don’t worry. You may still be able to move to one, even if it’s after the annual enrollment period. Contact your licensed MA sales agent for more details.

Humana is a Medicare Advantage [HMO, HMO SNP, PPO, PPO SNP and PFFS] organization with a Medicare contract. Enrollment in any Humana plan depends on contract renewal. Every year, Medicare evaluates plans based on a 5-star rating system.
